8 Moves Series: Water, 5 Mini-Devos, Group Discussion, Sermon Outline
Key Word: Flow
Elemental Theme: Water – Nourishment, renewal, dependence, transformation
Spiritual Focus: Mind (continued)
Movement: From control to surrender, from dryness to refreshment
Primary Scripture Anchor:
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” – John 7:38
✦ DEVOTIONAL 1: “Draw from the Deep Well”
Scripture:
“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” – John 4:14
Focus: Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at the well and offers her something deeper than physical water—living water that satisfies the soul.
Observation: We often reach for shallow, surface solutions to deep thirsts. But Jesus points us to a hidden, internal source only He can give.
Contemplative Practice: Sit quietly and breathe slowly, imagining Jesus offering you a cup of living water. What thirst are you bringing to Him?
Practical Challenge: Each time you drink water this week, whisper a short prayer: “Satisfy me with your presence, Lord.”
✦ DEVOTIONAL 2: “Wade into the Waters”
Scripture:
“Then Joshua said to the people, ‘Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.’” – Joshua 3:5
Focus: Before Israel could cross the Jordan, the priests had to step into the water first. God’s power met them at the point of obedience.
Observation: Faith often looks like stepping into uncertainty. The waters don’t part until your feet get wet.
Contemplative Practice: Reflect on a decision or transition you’re facing. Imagine the Jordan River in front of you. What does God want you to step into?
Practical Challenge: Take one step this week toward something God is calling you to do, even if the outcome isn’t clear yet.
✦ DEVOTIONAL 3: “Let It Flow”
Scripture:
“Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” – John 7:38
Focus: When we believe in Jesus, His Spirit flows from within us—not as a trickle, but as a river. Faith isn’t just for us; it blesses others through us.
Observation: Water that is stagnant becomes unhealthy. But flowing water brings life wherever it goes.
Contemplative Practice: Ask: Where has my spiritual life become stagnant? What might God be trying to flow throughme, not just to me?
Practical Challenge: Serve someone this week out of overflow—bring a meal, write a note, or give generously.
✦ DEVOTIONAL 4: “The Storm and the Stillness”
Scripture:
“Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” – Matthew 8:26
Focus: Water can be calm or chaotic. In a storm, the disciples panicked—but Jesus spoke peace. He didn’t remove the water, He transformed it.
Observation: We want escape from the storm. Jesus offers peace in the storm. What we fear, He walks on.
Contemplative Practice: Close your eyes and breathe slowly. Picture a storm on the sea. Hear Jesus say: “Peace. Be still.”
Practical Challenge: When stress rises this week, pause before reacting. Say aloud: “Jesus, calm the storm in me.”
✦ DEVOTIONAL 5: “Baptized into New Life”
Scripture:
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death… in order that… we too may live a new life.” – Romans 6:4
Focus: Water doesn’t just cleanse—it buries and raises. Baptism is both death to the old and birth into the new.
Observation: Faith is not a surface commitment but a total immersion. We enter the waters not just for refreshment but for transformation.
Contemplative Practice: Reflect on your baptism or spiritual rebirth. What died? What lives?
Practical Challenge: Identify one area in your life that needs to be buried—an old pattern, habit, or mindset—and surrender it this week.
✦ SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION: “Go with the Flow?”
Session Goal: To explore the meaning of water in the biblical narrative and in our spiritual lives—how God refreshes, redirects, and renews.
Opening Prayer: Ask God to help the group be open to His flow and willing to let go of control.
Warm-up Question:
- What’s your relationship with water—do you prefer oceans, rivers, or lakes? Why?
Scripture Focus:
- John 4:1–14 (Woman at the Well)
- John 7:37–39 (Living Water)
- Matthew 8:23–27 (Jesus calms the storm)
Discussion Prompts:
- What kind of “thirst” do you recognize in your life right now?
- Where have you seen God’s Spirit “flow” through you to bless someone else?
- What does it look like to surrender to the flow of the Spirit, rather than resist it?
- What storm in your life needs the calming voice of Jesus?
Group Activity:
- Pass around cups of water. Each person writes one word on their cup that describes something they need from God (e.g., peace, joy, clarity). Pray together, one by one, asking God to pour that living water into each person’s life.
Challenge for the Week:
- Begin each day by drinking a glass of water while reading one of the devotion Scriptures. Let it be a physical and spiritual habit.
✦ SERMON OUTLINE: “Living Water: The Flow of Faith”
Title: “Let It Flow”
Key Text: John 7:37–39
I. Introduction: Thirst is Universal
- Everyone is thirsty for something: purpose, peace, connection.
- Jesus offers something no earthly source can—living water.
II. Water in the Biblical Story
- Genesis: The Spirit hovers over the waters.
- Exodus: God parts the sea, provides water from a rock.
- Prophets: “Come, all you who are thirsty…” (Isaiah 55)
- Gospels: Jesus walks on water, stills storms, turns water to wine, offers living water.
III. What Is Living Water?
- The Holy Spirit. Not a concept, but a presence.
- Living water is dynamic, moving, renewing.
IV. Flow vs. Control
- God’s Spirit flows best in hearts that aren’t trying to dam up every outcome.
- We often resist what’s meant to refresh us because we fear letting go.
V. Application: How to Live in the Flow
- Receive the Water – Ask God daily to fill you.
- Wade In – Take the first step of obedience before clarity arrives.
- Let It Flow Through You – Become a river, not a reservoir.
Closing Illustration:
- Share a story of someone who stepped into the unknown and found God’s refreshing presence—a moment of surrender that became a breakthrough.
Call to Action:
- Where are you resisting the flow? What’s one area where you need to surrender and receive the living water of Jesus?
Closing Thought: Water is more than refreshment—it’s a sign of surrender. May the flow of God’s Spirit cleanse, shape, and carry you forward, even when the current is slow. You are invited to trust the depths, not just the shallows.
