Light · Reading · Decisions

Your phone’s flashlight is the only light in the hallway. The beam lands a few steps ahead, on the edge of the rug and the first stair, and nothing past them. You take the step you can see, and the light moves with you. Most decisions come that way, one lit step at a time. What step is lit in front of you right now?
The psalmist answers God’s word with a promise. “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. I have sworn, and have confirmed it, that I will obey your righteous ordinances.” (Psalm 119:105-106 WEB). Psalm 119 is an alphabet poem, and every verse in this section begins with the Hebrew letter nun.
The one carrying this lamp is in trouble. “I am afflicted very much. Revive me, LORD, according to your word. Accept, I beg you, the willing offerings of my mouth. LORD, teach me your ordinances.” (Psalm 119:107-108 WEB). “Revive me” is chayyeni, from chayah, to live: keep me alive.
Spiritual Move: Scripture Memorization. Stand at one end of a room. Say Psalm 119:105 aloud, one phrase at a time, taking one step with each phrase. Walk it back and forth until you can say it without looking.
