Light · Wisdom · Learning

On a rocky point, a lighthouse keeper climbs the stairs at dusk and cleans the glass so nothing dims the beam. He will never meet most of the ships that pass. They see his light from miles out and steer clear of the rocks. Somewhere behind you, someone is learning the way by watching you. Who is steering by your light?
Jesus is teaching his disciples on a mountainside (Matthew 5:1-2). “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14 WEB). The “you” is plural, humeis, spoken to all the disciples together.
Jesus’ lamp is lit for the people in the house to see by. “Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:15-16 WEB). This is the first time in Matthew that Jesus calls God the disciples’ Father.
Spiritual Move: Service. Do one good work today for someone near you, a meal or an errand. If they thank you, give the thanks to God out loud.
