Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!
Luke 10:23 (ESV)
Consider light and communication. Light is used in a variety of ways for communication. Fiber optic cable is the conduit between digital transmitters and receivers. For centuries, mirrors and lights have been used to send signals across great distances. Signals, signs, and messages are used to transmit messages, to enlighten. When truth enters our minds in these extraordinary ways, we are said to be enlightened. The metaphor is beautifully entangled between the material and the spiritual. We also call in inspiration, whether it be light, that has become enlightenment, or spirit that has brought the breath of truth to our minds. We are inspired and enlightened.
Jesus said, “He who has eyes to see, let him see.” There are many aspects of sight, that can symbolize the understanding that Jesus is trying to bring us. Consider focus — because of the light and the reality of our circumstances, our eyes allow us to focus on the most important item in our range of sight at any moment engages our ability to prioritize actions. From the beginning of our development, we were able to identify danger, food, enemies, loved ones, and friends. When we focus our values and our eyes on what we need most, we can grow, protect, empower, communicate, and love.
I distinguish vision from sight in this way: It’s one thing to see, another to have the ability to look forward, in front of you, with a goal in mind. Then, when you have a vision, you can set goals, imagining what will happen as a result of certain actions. Furthermore, you can make adjustments when things are a little off, to meet your goals. It may take several adjustments to tune into your objectives. Eventually, you will accomplish that goal. Keep thinking about the lesson, the essence of vision. Do you have a vision? Are your values informing the targets you need to place in your sights? Are you working to be productive and protective of those you love and are responsible for?
