“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his” (Hebrews 4:9-10 ESV).
Sabbath is more than setting one day of the week for rest. It is a posture of trust and surrender, releasing control and trusting in God’s provision. Our value is not measured by our productivity. God rested from work and we are invited to rest in Him, because He holds all things together.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work” (Exodus 20:8-10 ESV).
The constant striving of our world is radically opposed by observing the Sabbath. It is a time to stop, and reflect on the truth of God’s presence. Set aside space—both physically and mentally— today, to cease from striving. Rest is both physical and spiritual. It’s a time where we find renewal in God’s care.
Today, reflect on what it looks like to enter into God’s rest. Try to find time to embrace this rhythm, and trust that God will provide for all your needs?
Journaling: What does it mean for you to rest in God? How might Sabbath rest help you let go of control? Find ways to embrace God’s provision?
Prayer: God, thank You for the gift of rest. Help me to trust in Your provision and let go of the need to always strive. Teach me to embrace the rhythm of Sabbath. May I take time to rest in body and in spirit, because You hold all things in Your hands. Amen.
