I’ve had a series of jobs that felt like dead ends—repetitive tasks, roles outside my interest and skillset, jobs that just paid the bills. It can be hard when work feels monotonous or disconnected from a greater purpose. Over time, I realized a deeper question: How is this shaping my character and building discipline? Even routine labor can have meaning if we allow it. Like a farmer looking ahead to the harvest, we can find fulfillment when we work faithfully, knowing that God will sign His name if we do it for Him.
“We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)
The discipline we develop in seemingly lowly jobs can reap great benefits in future productivity. Even the perfect job will have moments of struggle and responsibility we don’t want to face—but faithfulness in small things prepares us for greater purpose. Jesus reminds us, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Luke 10:2 ESV). Whatever season of work we are in, we are called to labor with purpose, trusting that our efforts contribute to something greater.
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
