“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV).
Work is often seen as something we must do to meet daily needs, but from a spiritual perspective, work has a much deeper meaning. Work is woven into the fabric of our identity. Made in God’s image. God works, we work, showing us that we are not just created for tasks; we are God’s workmanship, crafted by Him to fulfill a purpose. The work we do is a reflection of His design and His calling on our lives.
“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do” (John 17:4 ESV).
Here we see Jesus Himself is an example of what it means to finish the work God gives. He glorified the Father through His obedience. Everything we do has eternal significance when done for God’s purpose. When our perspective changes, it becomes less about getting things done and more about walking in the good works God has prepared.
Journaling Prompt: What are the “good works” God has prepared for you? Reflect on the ways your work, at a job or home or in a community, are opportunities to fulfill God’s purpose. Are there ways you could approach them differently? Are there ways you can discover how they are part of His plan?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for creating me as Your workmanship. Help me see my work not as a burden, but as a calling to walk in the good works You have prepared for me. May we all obtain strength, wisdom, and joy in all we do. Amen.
