The average distance a woman or child walks, coping with water insecurity globally, is six kilometers. A difficult daily chore, she approached the well in the heat of the day. She came for water, expecting nothing more than water for the day’s need. Jesus was there, ready to offer her more than quenching her thirst.
“Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” (John 4:14 ESV)
Jesus was there to offer her a spiritual and eternal relationship—a living stream that would never run dry. The water, not from the well before them but from the well of the Spirit for eternal life. A spiritual refreshment that would quench her deepest thirst.
“Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” (Proverbs 25:25 ESV)
We know how a cool drink brings relief. Water is essential for life, encouragement and truth are essential for our soul. A word, a message, assurance that we are not alone. The promised relationships with Christ and His Church are the good news. This is the message, in the midst of our brokenness, God reminds us that we are seen, loved, and saved.
“He will guide them to springs of living water.” (Revelation 7:17 ESV)
There is a promise of refreshment for the Christ community. On our journey living streams are provided, moments of grace, encounters with His presence. When your life feels dry and dehydrated, you can trust that there is direction toward the springs of refreshment; and a promise of the guidance of the Spirit.
Try this: Practicing Gratitude – It is easy to take the water that sustains life for granted. Each time you drink today, pause and give thanks for His provision—physical and spiritual. Let each glass be one example of the many ways the promise of refreshment is fulfilled.
