“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3 ESV)
God speaks light into creation with this first action. God brings structure into chaos by illuminating the void of darkness. God’s authority over darkness sets a foundation for creation and revelation. The light metaphor encourages us to seek clarity and purpose.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5 ESV)
John, one of the closest disciples to Jesus, writes to reveal Him as the eternal Word (Logos) and light of life. Jesus’ light illumines the victory of Christ and His people through His presence in the midst of the world’s spiritual darkness. Trusting the eternal light helps us to live by faith even during times of personal darkness.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14 ESV)
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus describes the role His followers will have in the world. They will reflect God’s light; living as a light through love, service, and integrity, revealing God’s purpose and presence to the world.
Consider where you can light up an area of life. How you can serve or show kindness in a way that brings hope and reveals God’s love to others. perhaps you can commit to an act of service or kindness. Even small actions of love and integrity can shine brightly.
