Devo 1.3 Turn to the Light

Posted on November 30, 2025November 30, 2025

Just as light reveals time and space for all, turning toward Christ centers our lives on His unwavering presence. This stability transforms us into steady, guiding markers of grace that others can follow and be inspired by.

Einstein’s theory of relativity showed that light’s speed is constant, no matter the observer. This means light connects everything—it defines time and space. When we turn toward Christ, we’re aligning with something both constant and cosmic. God’s light in us isn’t decorative; it’s directional. Like sunflowers tracking the sun, our posture matters. A life turned toward divine light becomes a fixed point—an orientation that others use to find their way.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 ESV)

Radiating God’s light to the world: Jesus declares that his followers are collectively the “light of the world”—a startling identity statement about our purpose and influence. Through the metaphors of a city on a hill and a lamp on a stand, he emphasizes that our light is meant to be visible and beneficial to others. Because our illuminated lives aren’t meant for self-congratulation but to direct attention and glory to our heavenly Father.

“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV)

Paul connects our light-bearing capacity to God’s original creative act of bringing light into darkness. The same God who spoke light into existence has now placed his light within our hearts. Because this divine light gives us knowledge of God’s glory as revealed in Jesus Christ—a treasure we’re meant to share, not hide.

Spiritual Move: Silence

Silence is a form of receptivity to God’s illuminating presence, quieting distractions to focus solely on His voice. In the stillness, you experience His light penetrating deep into your heart and mind, revealing areas that need healing and restoration.

Journal & Discuss:

1. In what ways might you be “hiding your light” out of fear, complacency, or self-protection?

2. What makes us hesitant to let our light shine boldly in today’s culture?

3. Where do you see the greatest need for Christ’s light in your community?
