Devo 2.0 With the Spirit

Posted on November 6, 2025November 6, 2025

The Spirit moves before anything takes shape. This invites us to enter stillness and allow God’s presence to prepare us.

Just before dawn, fog lingers over quiet lakes, clinging to the surface in a silent embrace. It does not force its presence, but forms gently, suspended between night and day. In this stillness, the world pauses—held in tension, waiting for what will come next.

Have you ever paused long enough to feel that quiet between moments? Imagine hovering there—before the decision, before the change, before the light breaks through. It’s a space that resists rushing, asking only for your presence and attention.

This is the posture of spiritual attentiveness. To hover is not to be idle, but to remain open, alert, expectant. In these still places, before shape or direction arrives, the practice of silence prepares you. The soul listens, not for answers, but for presence. And often, that’s where the real beginning takes place.

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2 ESV)

This imagery shows the Spirit as the active force that begins the process of creation. Before light, before land, before life, the Spirit is already at work—hovering, waiting to bring transformation to the chaos. This same Spirit continues to move today, preparing the ground of our hearts for God’s creative work to take root.

“‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit…” (John 7:38-39 ESV)

In John 7, Jesus connects the movement of the Spirit to the flow of living water—a constant source of life, renewal, and transformation. As believers, the Spirit’s presence within us isn’t just for us—it’s meant to flow out to others, offering the refreshing power of God’s grace to those around us.

Spiritual Move: Confession

Confession is a cleansing practice, where you acknowledge your sins and ask for God’s forgiveness. In doing so, you allow the living water of Christ to purify your heart, refreshing and renewing your soul from the inside out.

Journaling Prompts:

  1. What areas of your life feel chaotic or formless, and how can you invite the Spirit to move in those areas?
  2. In what ways has the Holy Spirit brought renewal to you, like water to a dry soul?
  3. How do you understand the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life as it relates to the imagery of water in Scripture?
