God formed land from the waters and called it good. He shaped it as a place where life could grow, flourish, and take root. In this sacred space, God placed humanity—not just to live, but to work, to keep, to belong. From the first breath, we were created not to drift but to be grounded. Before we ever take a spiritual step, we stand on what God has already done.
We live in Southern California; almost everything is unstable near the San Andreas Fault. Have you ever seen a house built without a solid foundation? A slight shift in the ground, and everything cracks. We know this instinctively: what holds us up matters. Has it been a tough season—anxiety, transition, or loss? You’ve felt the ground shake. But we are not left to stand alone.
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24 ESV)
Jesus invites us into wisdom: not just hearing His words, but doing them—building our lives on the foundation of His truth. The storms will come. The winds will howl. But those grounded in Him stand firm. It’s not a question of if hardship arrives, but where we are rooted when it does.
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15 ESV)
This is our original calling—to live with purpose and presence. To tend and keep, to dwell and cultivate. It’s in working the land, in being present to our surroundings, that we also keep ourselves—our hearts, our identity, our faith.
Spiritual Move: Prayer Walking
Walk your neighborhood or a nearby park. Pray for the people and the land you see. Let every step be a return to your grounding in God.
