The Gardeners of Eden: In the early days, Adam and Eve stood in the vast garden, marveling at its beauty. Yet, the Creator had a task for them beyond admiration. “Work the land, care for it,” He said, entrusting them with the stewardship of the earth. Their hands nurtured the soil, and as they toiled, the garden flourished under their care. Likewise, our work, whatever form it takes, is a continuation of this divine commission—to cultivate, grow, and contribute to the world as part of God’s grand design. This responsibility is not just about productivity but about partnering with God in shaping and sustaining the world He created.
God Gives Work to Humanity: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15 ESV)
From the beginning, work was part of God’s design for humanity. We were created not just to admire the world but to actively engage with it, cultivating and stewarding creation as part of God’s greater purpose.
The Harvest is Plentiful: “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.’” (Luke 10:2 ESV)
Jesus reminds us that God’s mission requires workers. The spiritual harvest is abundant, but the need for dedicated laborers is great. Whether through physical work or spiritual effort, we are called to fulfill the divine commission to bring forth fruit for God’s kingdom.
Work is not just a task to be completed—it is a calling. Genesis 2:15 shows that work was given to humanity as part of our original purpose, making us stewards of God’s creation. This calling extends beyond merely fulfilling obligations; it’s an invitation to participate in God’s plan, caring for the earth and contributing to His mission. Luke 10:2 expands this by applying the metaphor of harvest to spiritual labor, reminding us that our work is not just for the present but for God’s eternal purposes. How can you align your daily work with God’s grand design and see it as part of your divine calling?
Spiritual Move: Service – To make a impact in the world, serving others as Christ served, and reflecting God’s love through action. Use your time, talents, and resources to serve others, especially those in need. By approaching work as a form of service, we mirror God’s love and faithfulness. Embrace the responsibility of your work as a way to care for others, whether through physical labor, acts of kindness, or spiritual encouragement. Serve with joy and gratitude, knowing that your work is an expression of faith and a reflection of God’s character.
