Devo 7.3 Be Still Before the Lord

Posted on October 16, 2025October 15, 2025

Your body was designed for rest. Today, we explore how embracing stillness restores the soul, drawing from God’s rhythm woven into creation. Learn to pause, release urgency, and experience the peace of His presence.

Human bodies are wired for rhythm. Every day, your heart rests between beats, your lungs pause between breaths, and your brain cycles through patterns of sleep and wakefulness. Our lives are often filled with noise and urgency, yet our souls quietly crave rhythm and rest. Spiritual rest isn’t passive; it’s purposeful. Stillness reminds us we have been created to dwell in the present reality, renewed by divine peace.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:1-3a ESV)

This beloved psalm portrays God as a shepherd who actively creates conditions for our rest and restoration. By recognizing God’s leadership (“makes me lie down”) and following His guidance toward nourishing environments, we experience provision that addresses our deepest needs. The Shepherd knows what our souls require for genuine restoration, even when we resist the very rest we need.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10 ESV)

This verse commands us to cease our frantic activity so we can recognize God’s sovereign authority and presence. By deliberately stilling our bodies, minds, and spirits before God, we create space to perceive His reality and perspective more clearly. Our stillness serves as both acknowledgment of God’s supremacy and the necessary condition for experiencing His peace amid turmoil.

Spiritual Move: Worship

Worship is a form of rest that restores your soul by focusing entirely on God’s goodness and majesty. It allows you to pause and give glory to God, allowing His presence to fill you with peace, comfort, and renewal.

Journal & Discuss:

1. When do you feel most resistant to being “made to lie down”? What might God be offering you in those moments of enforced rest?

2. Has there been a time when being still before God changed your perspective on a difficult situation.

3. What might it look like to create more opportunities for contemplative rest in your daily rhythm?
