Before anything had shape or form, the Spirit moved—hovering over the deep, preparing creation with quiet power. Like water flowing into unseen places, the Spirit brings discernment not by force but through presence, readying our lives for transformation we can’t always predict or control.

Water is never truly still. Even in a glass left untouched, its molecules are in constant motion—bumping, shifting, seeking balance. Scientists call this Brownian motion: the ceaseless activity within what appears calm. Beneath the surface, there is movement. Could the same be true in our lives? Might there be a quiet, unseen presence already at work, stirring things into readiness—even when all feels formless?
“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2 ESV)
This imagery shows the Spirit as the initiating force in creation—active before light, land, or life. The Spirit hovers over the chaos, ready to shape it. That same Spirit continues to move today, preparing the ground of our hearts for God’s creative work to take root.
“‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit…” (John 7:38–39 ESV)
In John 7, Jesus connects the movement of the Spirit to flowing water—a continual source of life, renewal, and transformation. The Spirit’s presence within us isn’t meant to remain contained. It flows outward, refreshing others with the grace we ourselves have received.
Spiritual Move: Confession
Confession is a cleansing act of trust and truth. When we bring our failures into the light and seek God’s forgiveness, we open ourselves to the purifying flow of the Spirit—living water that renews us from the inside out.
