Day 1: God’s Light in Creation
- Genesis 1:3 (ESV): “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
- John 1:5 (ESV): “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
- Psalm 27:1 (ESV): “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
- Ephesians 5:8 (ESV): “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.”
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” (Genesis 1:3-5 ESV)
God first speaks light into creation, setting the stage for structure and life. Imagine the universe in darkness and void—then, with one statement: light. Suddenly, there is clarity, warmth, and purpose. Light is more than a physical phenomenon; it represents God’s presence, and its separation from darkness marks the beginning of divine order in creation.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12 ESV)
The theme of light flows from creation to Jesus as the Light of the World. He leads us out of spiritual darkness and into life, revealing truth and guiding us. God’s light brought order to the physical world, and Jesus’ light guides us through life’s challenges.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105 ESV)
God’s word, like light, guides our journey. His truth is a reliable resource for our path, an eternal lamp that illuminates the way. When we let His light guide our steps, we walk with clarity and purpose.
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” (Isaiah 60:1 ESV)
Just as light separates from darkness at creation, light in our lives separates confusion from clarity. Jesus, the light that saves and guides, offers a vision for our future. Living in this light, we reflect it to benefit others, becoming beacons of His truth in a dark world.
Take another look at the image above. The light breaks through the darkness, symbolizing the reality and miracle of creation and the clarity that God’s presence brings.
“Where in your life do you need the light of Christ to bring clarity today?”
“Lord, shine Your light in my heart and on my path today. Help me walk in Your truth, and let Your presence be my guide through every step. Amen.”
