“Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain” (Isaiah 40:4 ESV).
God has called us to care for the land. This requires molding and shaping the terrain for housing and farming needs. Isaiah’s scroll reminds us that God promises to return and bless his followers who have been exiled to Babylon, modern-day Iraq. The prophecy predicts the natural world being transformed—valleys lifted, mountains brought low and rough places made smooth. This is a metaphor for spiritual and societal transformation.
“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Psalm 24:1 ESV).
The earth belongs to God. He challenges us to understand our job is to be stewards. We are called to be part of the care and transformation of the world. We partner with as co-creators to bring about His will.
Practice: Ask God to give you the wisdom and strength to take action. Whether it’s advocating for justice, caring for creation, or speaking hope into a difficult situation, commit to being part of the change. Journaling: Write about the “terrain” in life and community that needs transformation. How can I work toward His vision for the future?
