“Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7 ESV)
In the beginning, life was formed from the dirt. Dust became life by the breath of God. God kissed humanity into existence; the first man inhaled the breath of life and was filled with His Spirit. The Hebrew word for Spirit is wind and there is a profound connection between God’s Spirit and our vitality. The Spirit that moved over the waters and brought order out of chaos also dwells within humanity.
“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” (Job 33:4 ESV)
This dual function of the Spirit is a profound idea within Job’s experience. He reminds us that the same life-giving Spirit created and sustains us. This can increase our sense of gratitude and dependence on God for both physical and spiritual life. Reflection: How does the image of God breathing life into humanity shape your understanding of Him? How can you reconnect with the life-giving Spirit? Journaling Prompt:
Write about a time when you felt aware of God’s presence. How did that awareness affect the way you lived? Prayer: Lord, thank You for breathing life into me. Help me to live in awareness of Your Spirit. Help me to rely on You for strength, peace, and renewal. May the Spirit sustain me today. Amen.
