Light · Faith · Awareness

On Christmas Eve the church goes dark except for one candle at the front. Its flame passes from wick to wick down the rows, each person tipping an unlit candle toward a neighbor’s. In a few minutes the whole room is glowing, and every flame came from the first one. Your faith was lit from someone else’s flame. Whose light did yours come from?
John begins his Gospel where Genesis begins (Genesis 1:1). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1-2 WEB). The Greek for “with” is pros, which usually means toward.
John’s light is a person: the life that was in the Word. “All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.” (John 1:3-5 WEB). “Overcome” is katelaben, to grasp or seize.
Spiritual Move: Worship. Sit in a dark room with one small light, a candle or your phone’s flashlight. Read the passage aloud, then spend ten minutes praising Jesus as the light that came into the world.
