It is late, and you are scrolling through real estate listings. Bigger kitchens and yards with room for a garden. Each one makes your own place look a little smaller. You start calculating down payments; who are you kidding? It will be twenty years before you can afford it. What are you fretting about owning?
David, now old (Psalm 37:25), writes to people watching the wicked get ahead. “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him. Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Don’t fret; it leads only to evildoing.” (Psalm 37:7-8 WEB). The Hebrew for “fret” is charah, to burn with anger.
He looks further down the road. “For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there. But the humble shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” (Psalm 37:9-11 WEB). The land comes to those who wait for the LORD. Jesus quotes verse 11 in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:5).
Spiritual Move: Waiting on God. Sit still for ten minutes with your hands open. Name the thing you have been fretting over, then hand it to God and wait in silence.
