Land · Money · Food

The family sits up straighter when the lawyer opens the will. The loud cousin who visited once a year expects the house. It goes instead to the quiet one who drove Grandma to every appointment. Nobody saw it coming except Grandma. Who do you count out because they are quiet?
Jesus sits down on a mountain to teach his disciples (Matthew 5:1). “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:3-4 WEB). His words echo Isaiah, who was sent with good news to the humble and comfort for all who mourn (Isaiah 61:1-2).
Here the promise of land is given to the gentle. “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:5-6 WEB). Jesus is quoting Psalm 37:11, where the Hebrew erets can mean the land of Israel or the whole earth.
Spiritual Move: Justice. Do one concrete act of justice today for one person who is being overlooked. Speak up for them or bring them a meal, and do it quietly.
