It’s been said that there are two great volumes of revelation. The word revelation means “a revealing,” something that once was hidden and is revealed. The first volume is General Revelation, what we can see in nature. The second is Special Revelation, found by the special actions of God in people and also expressed in Scripture. We start this series of devotions with pages from the first volume, the Book of Nature. May God continue to reveal himself as you turn the pages of Creation
In the deep ocean, bioluminescent creatures like the lanternfish emit light in the darkest depths. This natural phenomenon serves as both a defense mechanism and a means of communication, illuminating their surroundings in a place where no sunlight reaches. Similarly, God’s Word illuminates our lives, offering us guidance and protection in a world that can often feel confusing or dark. Just as the lanternfish relies on its light to survive, we too must rely on the light of Scripture to navigate the challenges we face.
“The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130 ESV).
This verse reminds us that God’s Word reveals truth and understanding, even to those who feel unworthy or inadequate. In the ancient world, light symbolized clarity, wisdom, and divine revelation. As we meditate on Scripture, we allow God to shine His light on our paths, clearing the confusion and leading us in truth. The more we open our hearts to His Word, the more we are transformed by its power.
Often, our distractions and fears can block us from receiving this light. We may resist being vulnerable or avoid the truths that challenge our current mindset. But when we allow the light of God’s Word to penetrate our hearts, we are invited into greater awareness of His presence and purpose in our lives.
Spiritual Move: Awareness—The practice of noticing God’s presence in all things. Reflect on how God’s light is guiding you today. Journal Prompt: Where do you sense God’s light revealing new truths in your life? What areas of your heart need His illumination?
