Beneath the ocean’s surface lies a phenomenon oceanographers call the “deep scattering layer”—a mysterious band where countless marine organisms rise toward the surface at night and descend to darker depths by day. This daily vertical migration of life creates a rhythm in the deep waters, invisible to casual observers above. The creatures move through different water pressures, temperatures, and light conditions, adapting to each depth’s unique environment while maintaining their essential nature throughout their journey.

Have you ever sensed similar currents moving within your own heart? Perhaps in moments of quiet reflection, you’ve felt stirrings deep inside—longings, questions, or intuitions rising to consciousness like these creatures ascending from the depths. These internal movements often occur at threshold times—dawn, dusk, or during significant life transitions—when your inner waters shift and what lies below surfaces momentarily into awareness.

This flowing movement between depths and surface mirrors the spiritual reality of our inner lives. Like hidden currents that move silently through deep waters, the spirit flows within us, sometimes hidden in our deepest places, sometimes rising to animate our conscious thoughts and actions. Our spiritual essence doesn’t remain static but moves dynamically through the various depths of our being, refreshing stagnant places and bringing life-giving movement to our hearts. When we learn to recognize and honor these currents, we discover a wellspring within that nourishes not only ourselves but flows outward to revitalize others.

“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2 ESV)

This imagery shows the Spirit as the active force that begins the process of creation. Before light, before land, before life, the Spirit is already at work—hovering, waiting to bring transformation to the chaos. This same Spirit continues to move today, preparing the ground of our hearts for God’s creative work to take root.

“‘Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit…” (John 7:38-39 ESV)

In John 7, Jesus connects the movement of the Spirit to the flow of living water—a constant source of life, renewal, and transformation. As believers, the Spirit’s presence within us isn’t just for us—it’s meant to flow out to others, offering the refreshing power of God’s grace to those around us.

Spiritual Move: Confession

Confession is a cleansing practice, where you acknowledge your sins and ask for God’s forgiveness. In doing so, you allow the living water of Christ to purify your heart, refreshing and renewing your soul from the inside out.

Journaling Prompts:

  1. What areas of your life feel chaotic or formless, and how can you invite the Spirit to move in those areas?
  2. In what ways has the Holy Spirit brought renewal to you, like water to a dry soul?

Thought and Discussion Questions:

  1. How do you understand the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life as it relates to the imagery of water in Scripture?
  2. In what ways can confession open the door for spiritual renewal through the Holy Spirit?
  3. How has the Holy Spirit acted as a source of transformation in your personal walk with God?
  4. What are some practical steps you can take to invite the Spirit’s renewing presence into your daily life?
