Thirty-One: God’s Rest

Like the ocean’s tide that ebbs and flows daily, low and high tides are a picture of the natural rhythms of life. The seven-day work/rest rhythm was exemplified in Genesis 2, and every week we have an opportunity on the weekend to acknowledge that cycle. If the cycle of the tide can get in tune with the design of the universe, so can we.

Divine Pattern — “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” (Genesis 2:2-3 ESV) How can I make sure rest, called holy and modeled by God, is a priority?

Made for You — “And he said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.’” (Mark 2:27-28 ESV) Where has Sabbath felt like a burden rather than a gift, and what would it take to receive it differently?

Spiritual Move: Sabbath — Setting apart a regular rhythm of rest to enjoy the provision and sovereignty of God. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:8–10a ESV)
