The marathon is a type of pilgrimage. Why anyone would subject themselves to 26.2 miles is a fair question; one I’ve asked during every one of these journeys from point A to point B. Every journey has a start, a middle, and a finish.

The Forming Road — “And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart.” (Deuteronomy 8:2 ESV) What has the road revealed about you?

Known on the Road — “That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.” (Luke 24:13-15 ESV) Where on your journey have you discovered you were not alone?

Spiritual Move: Prayer Walk — Set out on a familiar route with open attention. Walk slowly and notice what surfaces. When you return, sit with what came up. “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8 ESV)
