Watching shadows in ancient times must have led our ancestors to the original clock, the sundial, a way for the sun to tell us where we stand in time. In earth science class, we were taught that the solar system is, in fact, a massive timepiece. All our devices are just a way to understand what’s already there to our advantage and progress. Was time keeping track of us long before we started keeping track of it?

A Time for Everything — “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 ESV) What season are you in right now, and what does it require of you?

Know the Time — Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. (Romans 13:11 ESV) What have you been sleeping through and it’s time to wake up?

Spiritual Move: Fixed-Hour Prayer — Try to structure your day around set times of prayer: morning, midday, and evening. Let the clock become a reminder that time belongs to God. Each pause is a small act of trust that the day doesn’t depend entirely on you. “He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.” (Daniel 6:10 ESV)
