We have seen the ocean’s waves rise to the sandy shore. We are reminded of the vast resource before us and can see the horizon that separates water and sky. The salt air in our nostrils and wind on our face and in our hair bring memories of family, friends, and walks along the beach. We ask, why are these connected so completely, and how should we respond?
Earth’s Enrichment — “You visit the earth and water it; you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide their grain, for so you have prepared it.” (Psalm 65:9 ESV) Where do you see abundant provision in the natural world around you?
Universal Generosity — “He sends out springs in the valleys; they flow between the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches.” (Psalm 104:10-12 ESV) What does water teach you about generosity and meeting needs?
Spiritual Move: Contemplative Prayer — This is the practice of sitting with a need in God’s presence, releasing the burden of words and outcomes, trusting the Spirit to intercede when words are not enough. Bring what you cannot articulate and simply stay. “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love.” (Zephaniah 3:17 ESV)
