We have heard the phrase “more is caught than taught.” Pottery is a good example — the teacher doesn’t lecture, he works alongside us. The form emerges from the relationship, not only the technique. We’ve heard the metaphor and even felt the truth when he is the potter and we are the clay. In the craft, big hands over little hands, discipleship happens.

Lord Builds the House — “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1 ESV) What work am I doing in my own strength that needs to be surrendered to God’s leading?

Created for Good Works — “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV) What unique gifts or talents has God given me to fulfill my purpose?

Spiritual Move: Vocation — The practice of discerning the work God has given to you, dedicating yourself to it, and offering it with excellence. “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.” (1 Corinthians 7:17 ESV)
