We have either followed someone in the dark with a light in their hand or can easily imagine the challenge of following in their footsteps. The lantern swings a little, casting shadows that sway before and around us. The leader is our example, perhaps has even been there before. We trust but are also responsible for our own steps. We walk in the security of being together. Followers take the narrow path with wonder about its end.

Visible Witness — “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 ESV) How is your life pointing others toward what is good and true?

Children of Light — “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true).” (Ephesians 5:8-9 ESV) Where are you walking in the light, and where are you not?

Spiritual Move: Scripture Memorization — Remembering by heart is a way to store light inside you. This daily practice of memorizing and reviewing God’s word makes it readily available for every step “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11)
